Easy Win Gives Town The Points
Coleshill did enough to win without ever exerting themselves. Their defence, with Geoff Statham back in action, was never troubled while Roy Phelps made a welcome return and showed up well in attack. Whitmore offered more resistance than did Moor Green last week, but they were no match for cock-a-hoop Town, who were straight on the attack, forcing two corners in the opening minutes. Williams, in the visitor’s goal, was on good form and he took out both the corners well. Phelps soon made his presence felt when he nodded on well for Hanlon, who lobbed over the bar as the keeper came out. Peter Garnell was brought into action when he saved a strong shot from Francis just under the bar, while at the other end Williams made a great interception as Phelps’ cross was bound for Coleman’s head. Coleshill had a goal disallowed, after an incredible mix-up in the Whitmore area. When the ball rebounded off William’s legs, Phelps knocked it back goalwards. The ball seemed to skim off Green’s foot and over the line, and Hanlon followed up to make sure. However, a linesman flagged for offside and the referee upheld his decision. But Coleshill were not to be denied and got the goal they deserved when Hanlon brought out a great save from Williams, but Coleman, following up, blasted home the loose ball. The second half began with Coleshill still attacking, but slowly the Old Boys found their feet and applied pressure of their own. Dorsett, Whitmore’s best raider, came close to reducing the arrears, but his shot went high and wide. Coleshill were not so dominant in midfield as in previous weeks, but John Bown had an outstanding game. His tackling and anticipation were top class and after an unspectacular start to the season, he has now established himself as one of Town’s stars. His efforts were almost rewarded with a goal. He climbed well to head a Statham cross, but Williams fell backwards to make yet another magnificent save. It was left to Oscar Deeming to put the result beyond doubt. When a corner was half-cleared, he collected the ball on the half-way line, and pumped it back towards the goal. Williams was distracted by the incoming Hanlon, and Deeming’s shot was allowed to roll into the net. For Coleshill, this was another deserved victory with not a single weakness, while if it had not been for Williams, Whitmore would have conceded a lot more goals.
