CASTLE BROMWICH NEWS WROTE
It’s Lucky 13 For Coleshill

The 13th game of the season proved lucky for Coleshill, when they recorded their first win of the season , beating Midland Combination Second Division opponents Alcester in the second round of the Challenge Cup. Coleshill fully deserved this belated success and manager Mervyn Parsons must now be hoping that his team will gain enough confidence to pick up the vital points so necessary if the club is to avoid seeking re-election. Certainly Coleshill displayed plenty of enthusiasm against Alcester and with Kevin Hunt moving from the front line into midfield and the attack augmented by the return of Steve Whipps after injury, Alcester were put under siege from the kick-off. Hunt quickly struck up a fine understanding with newcomer Dave Ellgood and from a strong midfield base Coleshill dominated the early proceedings. Gibbons, Hunt and Allen all had a crack at goal, forcing the visiting keeper into some fine saves. Alcester’s reprisal raids were checked by some smart defensive work by Page and with Coleshill carrying the game to their opponents the wonder is that they did not score before half time. As it was Ellgood created an opening for Bobby Whillock to shoot inches wide and Gibbons saw a shot cleared off the line. Coleshill maintained the offensive in the second half and from a cross by Hunt the youthful Whipps headed narrowly wide. Whillock then missed a cross from Allen, before Gibbons thrillingly gave his side the lead in the 62nd minute, when after beating two defenders, he placed the ball into the net from close range. Six minutes later Coleshill jubilantly made it 2-0. Hunt won the ball near his own goal line and hit a first time ball wide to Allen on the left. A quick pass inside found Whillock, who rounded the goalkeeper to slot the ball home. Colin Dolphin joined Coleshill’s attack for the last 15 minutes and hit two tremendous drives, the second of which was goal number three. This Saturday, Coleshill face a tough encounter at Pack Meadow, taking on title challengers Blakenall, kick off 2.45p.m.
